They are the two professors who gave me nature and history lessons. They understood that I so dearly wanted to do some of the things other children did, so they often combined their classes into two or three consecutive lessons and then we would visit museums – either the Hermitage in the Winter Palace, different public libraries or the Museum of Mining, where there were some very interesting models of shafts and the like. It was due to these tutors that I managed to see a lot. I was also allowed to accompany Mother to art exhibitions and by doing so I became interested in art in all its variations, especially painting, at an early age.
